April 29 - May 1 Dance Theater Workshop for luciana achugar The world premiere of PURO DESEO (MAP 2009) an evening-length work by choreographer luciana achugar and long-time collaborator Michael Mahalchick. New York, NY May 1 - May 31 Foundation for Independent Artists, Inc./Nora Chipaumire “lions will roar…” (MAP 2008), a new dance work that explores the anatomy of a revolution and the spirit of Zimbabwean resistance and survival in a cross-genre collaboration between contemporary African dance artist Nora Chipaumire and “The Lion of Zimbabwe,” musician Thomas Mapfumo. Mapfumo became a national hero by singing theme songs for a revolution with a deeper message about culture. This project is a mapping of Mapfumo’s music and an investigation of African contemporary dance that corresponds to the history of Zimbabwe and the timeline of art and revolution, as well as the artists' personal stories. New York, NY May 4 - May 14 PICA for Holcombe Waller Into the Dark Unknown: The Hope Chest (MAP 2008), original folk music (and a couple of Jacques Brel covers) by singer, composer and video artist Holcombe Waller. Backed by his ensemble "The Healers," Holcombe employs lyrics, monologues, large-scale video projections, movement and various assemblages of scenic elements. Croatia May 8 - May 9 MAPP for Dan Hurlin Disfarmer (MAP 2008), a new piece of puppet theater by Dan Hurlin, that examines the contradictions in the life of an American hermit. North Adams, MA May 14 - May 15 MAPP for Dan Hurlin Disfarmer (MAP 2008), a new piece of puppet theater by Dan Hurlin, that examines the contradictions in the life of an American hermit.
