About the Grant
$25,000 to support War With the Newts (MAP 2009) a stage adaptation of Karel Capek's 1936 story about globalization, xenophobia and isolationism by Jason Loewith.
About the Project
The strength of Capek's imagination is not simply that he told a remarkably prescient story of the rise of totalitarianism, but that he framed it within another story: that of how the ordinary man experiences that changing world through the media. His helplessness, his disenfranchisement from the global events he set in motion, is the tragedy that Capek wrote about. Loewith and his collaborators, Puppetmaker Michael Montenegro, dramaturg Celise Kalke and projection designer and videographer Mike Tutaj, will translate Capek’s story to the 21st century.
