About the Grant
$24,000 to support Into the Dark Unknown: The Hope Chest (MAP 2008), a new performance work by Holcombe Waller, comprised of contemporary folk songs presented as a new form of popular art music.
About the Project
With incisive song lyrics and monologues masquerading as between-song banter, Waller holds a mirror to his generation’s psychology in a time of war, religious stratification and environmental demise, making a new commentary on an emerging American liturgy where weekly recycling may trump Sunday church. In collaboration with scenic designer and co-artistic director Erik Flatmo, Holcombe and ensemble explore what kind of new sacred rites modern Americans perpetrate everyday to connect with a sense of higher, grander presence.
