About the Grant
$33,000 to support some united states (MAP 2005), a new large-scale work choreographed by John Jasperse with lighting design by Joe Levasseur and score by Zeena Parkins.
About the Project
some united states is comprised of 3 simultaneous performances, located in separate areas within the same theater, with lighting by Joe Levasseur and music by composer Zeena Parkins. Each of the 3 performances is distinct and could ultimately be performed separately. The temporal framework of the various performances is inter-linked, creating designed compliments and contrasts between otherwise distinct elements. Due to the spatial configuration, no one audience member can experience all aspects of all 3 performances. Energetic discords between the various parts set up dynamic juxtapositions. The awareness of the existence of a partially obstructed event is a primary aspect of the audience experience. A fragmented and, at times, discordant but none-the-less interconnected whole emerges - a society of performances which are at times opposing, yet inter-dependent.
some united states will premiere in late 2006 and co-production/presentation partners include the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Kunsterlhaus Mousonturm (Frankfurt), On the Boards (Seattle), Festival Montpellier Danse (France), and Tanz im August (Berlin).
