Who decides who receives a MAP grant?
The MAP Fund is adjudicated by artists and arts professionals working in an evaluator or panelist capacity for the Foundation, as well as by members of the Creative Capital staff. Panelists and evaluators are paid a small stipend for the contribution of their time.
All panel recommendations are subject to approval by the Creative Capital board of directors.
Panelists and evaluators remain anonymous during the review process. With their permission, their names are announced on the MAP fund Web site at the end of the year.
Nominate an evaluator or panelist.
What criteria does the panel use to judge proposals?
All proposals are evaluated on the basis of the following criteria, which are weighed equally:
- The artistic strength of the proposed project
- How well a project aligns with the MAP Fund's goal of supporting innovation in all traditions and disciplines of live performance, especially work that brings insight to the issue of cultural difference, be that in class, gender, generation, ethnicity, form or tradition
- The viability of the project, based on applicant's professional capabilities as demonstrated by their proposal
What happens after I submit my proposal?
The MAP review has three steps and takes approximately four months from the deadline date (February 1, 2008) to notification (Mid-June, 2008).
First step: Each proposal is reviewed by a MAP staff member, to ensure eligibility, and evaluated by an arts professional from the applicant's geographic region and a member of the Creative Capital staff.
Second step: An initial cut of about one-half of submissions is made based on the scores from field evaluators.
Third step: The remaining applications are reviewed by a national panel of artists and arts professionals at an on-site meeting at the MAP Fund offices in New York City. That panel recommends to the Foundation which projects to support.

About fiscal sponsorship.
Can an organization apply for more than one project?
Yes, as long as the artistic personnel on the projects are entirely separate.
What period of time does the 2008 MAP Grant cover?
September 1, 2008 and August 31, 2010.
How many awards are given each year?
Up to 40
What amount are the awards?
Award amounts range from $10,000 to $45,000. The average award amount is $22,000.
What can a grantee spend the award money on?
The MAP Fund may be applied to artist commissioning fees and salaries, research and development fees, or production expenses up to and including the premiere run of a performance for any given project.
MAP does not give grants for general operating costs for organizations or festivals.
MAP does not give grants for training or education projects.
Can a Lead Artist be on more than one MAP application in a given year?
Due to the numerous worthy proposals the MAP Fund receives each year, we ask that no artists be submitted on more than one project per grant cycle. It is the responsibility of the applicant organizations to ensure that the Lead Artists on their project are not being submitted on another MAP application. If an artist appears on more than one application, the artist is asked to select which application she/he would like to move forward for review. All other applications on which that artist is listed then become ineligible.
What's a Lead Artist?
A Lead Artist is the generative artist on a project - the choreographer, playwright, director, composer, and/or other artistic maker leading the creation of the new work.
The MAP application requests information and work samples for at least one but no more than three Lead Artists on a given project.
An organization's artistic or executive director who is not a primary creator of the proposed work should not be designated a Lead Artist.
Project support staff or "work for hire" artisans should not be designated Lead Artists.
Do Lead Artists have to be American citizens?
No, an applicant organization must be based in the US and have a federal nonprofit tax status, but artists may be from anywhere.
What if I have more than three Lead Artists?
Projects with numerous Lead Artists should designate three whose work best represents the proposed project.
Can an ensemble be considered a Lead Artist?
Yes. Ensemble companies that work in the tradition of co-creation may list the company as a composite Lead Artist, and submit no more than three work samples representing the group's work.
Can multiple ensembles apply for one project?
Yes. You may submit up to 3 ensembles as composite Lead Artists, and submit no more than 10-minutes of work sample material for each ensemble.
What does MAP mean by "ensemble."
MAP defines ensemble as a group of artists who have been co-creating works under a single name for at least 2 years.
Does my project have to premiere inside the United States?
No. However, the MAP Fund aims to support and encourage the performance field in the United States, so it is exceptionally rare that a project that exists entirely outside the U.S. will be funded by MAP.
Does MAP support projects of modest budgets?
Yes, size of budget is not a MAP criterion. However, applicants must prove a project's viability by submitting a budget that reasonably aligns with the projects goals.
Can I apply for the same project two years in a row?
Yes, the MAP Fund panel rotates each year, so a resubmission will be seen by a new group of panelists. In general, we don't advise applicants to submit the same project for funding more than twice.
How do I apply?
Starting December 3, 2008, organizations interested in applying to MAP may access the online application by creating an account on this website. The application need not be completed in one sitting. Work can be saved and returned to before the application is submitted.
What is the deadline date?
Completed applications may be sent electronically between January 1 and February 1, 2008.
Online submissions must be transmitted no later than 11:59 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST), February 1, 2008 (transmittal times appear on electronic applications).
Work Samples, which are required, are submitted through the mail and must be postmarked by February 1, 2008.
What information will I need to provide and what materials will I need to submit?
The MAP Application has two parts:
- Online Application Form
- Work Samples for Lead Artists
The application form requests historical and financial information about the applicant organization, details about the nature of the proposed project, biographical information about Lead Artists, and a description of the work samples that accompany the application.
Work Samples, which must be mailed to the MAP office by the post-mark deadline of February 1, 2008, are a critical element of your proposal; detailed information about their selection and submission is given on the Work Sample Information page. Applications that don't include a work sample for each Lead Artist will not be reviewed.
When will I be notified about my application's status?
Notification will be made via email to applicants by mid-June 2008. Feedback will be available, also via email, on request. Information on about how to request feedback will be included in your notification email.
Will you provide feedback to declined applicants?
Yes, the notification email sent at the end of the grant cycle provides information on how to request feedback. All feedback will be delivered via email.
Do I have to apply online?
While we prefer online applications, you may request a hard-copy by sending a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope to:
The Multi-Arts Production Fund
73 Spring Street
Ste. 401
New York, NY 10012
Mailed applications must be postmarked on or before February 1, 2008. All materials must be submitted in one package.
Can I hand deliver my work samples?
Hand-deliveries may be made to the MAP Fund Office from January 20 through February 1, 2008 from the hours of 10:00 am to 5:00 pm. (The office is closed on Saturday and Sunday.)
WE'RE SORRY, BUT DUE TO THE LARGE NUMBER OF APPLICATIONS WE RECEIVE, WE CANNOT ACCEPT LATE SUBMISSIONS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
